Instructor Profile – Lawrence Farr

Kung Fu on Michigan Ave, Detroit

Instructor Lawrence plating the Jong at the Detroit Kung Fu Academy - Michigan Ave Location

Lawrence Farr began training Ving Tsun (pronounced wing chun) Kung Fu at the Detroit Kung Fu Academy in 2012 at the age of 22. His first class was an introductory lesson with Sifu Owen Matson at the Eastern Market location on a Saturday afternoon. 6 Years later he is still practicing Ving Tsun and is now running a class at the new Michigan Ave location.

I like to think of myself as a guide more than an instructor. The only true teacher is the "Sifu" of the school. I am here to carry out the centuries old pre-set curriculum on how an individual should be trained in the Ving Tsun Kung Fu system.  I'm not here to teach the student in the literal sense, I am here to help that student learn from our Sifu. The details of this system are so intricate that me simply telling someone how to perform a technique won’t give that person the ability to actually pull it off. Only through many hours of practice will one learn how the Kung Fu is suppose to be applied. My role is to provide a reference for a student as they progress through the system and to help keep them on track.”

Aside from being an instructor of Ving Tsun Kung Fu in the evenings, Lawrence works at a Bank during the day utilizing his Masters in Business degree. He started his Masters program at the same time as his Ving Tsun training and the two activities went hand in hand. Lawrence used Ving Tsun Kung Fu to learn relaxation and other techniques that, he says, really enhanced his ability to deal with the workload.

Kung Fu has had a tremendous effect on both my professional and personal lives. The training has allowed me to become more confident and level headed. These benefits have come in handy in a fast-paced work environment. The relaxation and confidence gained from the Kung Fu allows me to approach any challenges at work with a clear mind, which helps in making the best decisions. In my personal life, the relaxation from Kung Fu has given me a newfound sense of freedom, I enjoy my life without worrying about the little things that I used to stress about everyday."

“My biggest inspiration was the realization that anyone that works hard and is dedicated can learn real Kung Fu. Over the first few months of training I began to build reflexes and confidence that I had been lacking. Sifu Owen would also reinforce these realizations by telling us stories about the history of our Kung Fu family. It is very humbling to think that the same principles we practice were also practiced by legendary Wing Chun masters such as: Ip Man, Moy Yat and Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee is a name everyone knows and is the most famous example of Ving Tsun Kung Fu, but after training you realize how hard he had to work to achieve his skill, that it did not come naturally. Even though history regards these individuals as legendary Kung Fu masters, they all have one thing in common, they were ordinary people who worked really hard to master their craft.”

The class Lawrence instructs takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm, and Saturdays at 11am at the newly renovated Michigan Ave location. One of the things Lawrence finds powerful about the new location is that classes take place on off days of the other locations. With the 7pm class on Tuesday and Thursdays on Michigan Ave, this fills in the gap of the Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule used in both Southfield and the Eastern Market schools. All 3 locations also offer a Saturday afternoon class. With classes 7 day a week between 3 locations the training schedule can accommodate any schedule.

So what motivates Lawrence to continue his training long term? He says that it is the Ving Tsun system itself and it’s eye towards mastery. The challenge of training and the results are things that keeps him going. The basic program is 2 years, at that point a student is proficient in the basics of the system and is able to handle whatever situation they might encounter. Further training results in advanced studies that go beyond basic self-defense. Ving Tsun at this advanced level can be studied with the goals of instructing or mastery of the complete system.

You should train Ving Tsun if you are looking for real world fighting Kung Fu that you can use the moment after you walk out of the doors of your first class. Even if you are not in need of immediate self-defense, the relaxation and health benefits achieved through training can be beneficial to all regardless of age or physical condition".
